28 November 2006: Sad day for Park Avenue in 2006 - Mayor Tremblay rammed through a name change, now a historic street with a 123 year heritage, Avenue du Parc, will be named "Bourassa" to celebrate another politician. This will be the second street named Bourassa in Montreal now.
The photo above is a composite - night photo of the current street sign, and posters that tried to send a message (unsuccessfully) to prevent the change.
In November, news reports suggested that people felt powerless to do anything about this, one example from Gazette - Park Ave Doomed.
January 2006: Gazette - Don't Write off Park Ave now shows increased opposition, and some hope for stopping the change.
7 February 2007: Park Avenue is saved! Gazette Feature on Park. This is truly an amazing story - news reports back in November had most people resigning themselves to the change, then continued buildup of the energetic opposition, finally leading to success! This is thrilling news, to see the people winning one against the dumb actions of politicians! This incident again adds to the things that make this a great city - people, places, and attitude.
